An over-arching plot is appreciated, and even expected by faithful fans, but Stan wanted to stress that the characters should be able to be recognized and understood by their actions and dialogue, rather than requiring tedious familiarity with backstory and continuity. The long-standing and respected comic book writer Stan Lee anecdotally has said and written that “every comic book is someone’s first comic book”, which is taken to mean that the short episodic format works best when the story is self-contained, not requiring much in the way of previous “work” or “research” for the reader to “get into the story”. In a sense, the format is itself the introduction. As a first episode, it has some responsibility to serve as an opening chapter or introduction to the characters, world, and situations viewers are liable to encounter, but the short format of the series makes it problematic to devote long periods of time to introduction, prologue, and exposition on the state of the setting, and the first episode of “Adventure Time” does not do so. In series order, “Slumber Party Panic” is the first episode of “Adventure Time” (or “Adventure Time With Finn & Jake”).
